Mark Dirven

Mark graduated from Utrecht University, The Netherlands in 2004. After graduation he worked in several small animal clinics and developed an interest in cardiology. From 2012 onwards he combined his work in private practice with a residency training programme at the veterinary hospital of Utrecht University. In March 2017 he became an EBVS® European specialist in small animal cardiology (Diplomate ECVIM-CA Cardiology). From 2017 until 2019 he continued to work as a cardiology specialist in a referral only private hospital and the university veterinary hospital.
In January 2019 he moved from the Netherlands to Sweden where he is currently based at one of the largest small animal hospitals in Europe, Evidensia Södra animal hospital in the Stockholm area. He leads the cardio department of the hospital where he is involved in patient care, research and teaching of vets and nurses. He regularly travels to other Evidensia hospitals within Sweden, Denmark and The Netherlands to set up cardiology or expand cardiology departments and provide training and supervision to veterinarians, nurses and cardiologists in training programs.
He is an associate editor for the Journal of Veterinary Cardiology and a board member of the European Society of Veterinary Cardiology.
His background in both private practice and academia helps him his clinical work, but also in his way of lecturing and teaching. He is valued for his hands-on approach to translating science into practice. As a result, he travels Europe and Asia to lecture whenever he can.
Outside work he is a keen runner and cyclist. Furthermore, he enjoys working on his small farm, walking his dog, fishing, and canoeing.
